Product Description

Our rugged fully sewn signal flags are made in America from heavy marine-grade nylon. You can buy with confidence.

A Word About Our International Code of Signals Flags

Our International Code of Signals flags are no-nonsense flags for serious marine use. They're made in America from 200 denier marine-grade nylon to resist the harmful effects of sun and salt water and they're fully sewn—not printed—with plenty of extra stitching for added strength. Plus the colors are bold and vibrant and will resist fading, even in the harsh sunlight conditions of open water.

All signal flag sets contain each of the 26 letters of the alphabet, 10 numerical pennants, 3 substitute (repeater) pennants and one code answering pennant—40 flags in all. We offer them in six official sizes plus you can choose the traditional rope & toggle flags, rugged Bronze Snaps & Rings or signal flags with grommets. All flags are sewn to order.

Nautical Signal Flags With Rope & Ash Toggle

Our flags with distance lines and toggles are made by sewing a durable nylon rope through the canvas duck header with a rope loop at one end and a virtually indestructible ash wood toggle at the other. The flags are simply strung together by slipping the toggle from one flag through the loop on the next flag, so taking them up and down is a faster operation—particularly when you are dealing with a large number of flags. These are the signal flags of choice for most experienced sailors and are mostly what we provide to the US Navy and Coast Guard.

Nautical Signal Flags With Rope & Bronze Snaps/Rings

These flags are like the Ash Toggle flags above, except they use Bronze Snap Hooks and Rings. The flags are simply strung together by hooking the snap from one flag to the ring on the next flag.

Nautical Signal Flags With Solid Brass Grommets

When you are buying a small number of flags, or if you intend to use your flag in a non-traditional way, such as a wall decoration, our signal flags with grommets are probably the way to go. You should be aware that in order to attach a flag with grommets to a halyard (rope), you're going to need some type of flag snap—preferably a solid brass swivel snap. But you probably knew that already!

How To Use The Repeater (Substitute) Pennants

Because a full set of International Code of Signals flags contain only one of each letter, the Repeaters (1st, 2nd, & 3rd) are used to hoist any four letter and some five (or more) letter combinations. R-A-D-A-R, for example, would be hoisted thus: R-A-D-2nd Repeater-1st Repeater, with the 2nd Repeater indicating the 2nd letter of the string and the 1st Repeater indicating the 1st letter of the string. A-A-R-D-V-A-R-K would be hoisted as: A-1st Repeater-R-D-V-2nd Repeater-3rd Repeater-K. In other words, the 1st Repeater "repeats" the first letter of the string, the 2nd Repeater "repeats" the second and so on.

The Code Answering Pennant

The Code Answering Pennant is used in one of two ways—it should always be the first hoist when signaling (Code) and it can be hoisted alone to indicate that a message from another vessel has been received (Answering).
